Happy New Year and Now I Want to Give You Things!

As you might imagine, I have a lot of books. Which is good, because I love books.

However, what I didn’t really understand until it was brought to my attention by D (who is far, far more organized than I am) is that I have a lot of MY books.

And I have to say, it feels amazing to have all these books—these physical reminders of what I’ve worked really hard on, what I’ve accomplished.

But the thing is … I don’t actually need this many.

So, in honor of my outrageous stockpile of books, I am going to implement what will henceforth be known as The Easiest Contest Ever.

I mean it. Easy-peasy.

Comment below, telling me a personal goal for the year 2012, be able to provide me with a US shipping address, and I will draw some names.

That’s it, the whole thing.

The contest will go for two weeks—now until Sunday the 15th at midnight Eastern—at which point I will draw something like six names, and each of those approximately six will get something in the mail. Probably a book.

(Really, a book)

What you need to understand: I’m not necessarily sticking to English-language versions. When I say I have a lot of books, I mean some that are in a language I can read, and some that aren’t.

Which means that you might receive one that isn’t.

You might receive additional prizes, such as buttons or stickers.

You might receive a book I didn’t write.

Honestly, this is a very freeform contest …

SO. That being said, good luck!

EDITED FOR CLARITY: No need to leave me a postal address here (I’ll get them later, if applicable), but if you could leave an email address, that would be fantastic!

Um, carry on.

  1. My goal is to be more social. I’m kind of shy. That and I want to read 360 books this year. And make the dance team. I have a lot of goals; these are only three.

  2. My personal goal for the New Year is to make more time for reading. I am always happy when I’m reading, and when I haven’t read in awhile because life slams me, I get twitchy, so my goal is to never get twitchy during 2012.

Thanks for the cool New Year’s giveaway—I love your books! :D

  3. A book in another language? I’d be down for that.

Love the idea of your freeform contest.

  4. Happy New Year to you Brenna!

This is going to seem hilariously counter-intuitive, but one of my goals for 2012 is to catalog and possibly purge some of my books. I have duplicates and triplicates and when I go to the bookstore often end up selecting something I already have because I thought it looked so nice the last time I went to the bookstore. :) One day I will have a house large enough to have a full library. Until then, the least I can do is get them organized and on a list!

All my best in the new year!
    Andrea

  5. I have a personal goal of reading at least one book each week in 2012. Winning this would certainly help in said goal. That is if I get one in a language I read. Address- 10431 Roan meadows dr. Boise, I’D 83709

  6. Freeform? Try awesome!
My goal for 2012 is two-part: to finish the research I’m immersed in, and to write two full first drafts. We’ll see how it goes!
    Cheers~

  7. My goal in 2012 is to become a better tin whistle player….because one day I decided to learn to play the tin whistle (I do these sorts of things often, pick a random thing to do and stick with it.) and I just want to get better. Maybe buy a low d whistle and learn to play that too. :)

  8. My main goal is to have my first ever completed draft which I only have two more scenes to write so that will be done soon. The next is to revise mightily and by that I mean a reconstruction of sorts. Step three: query! Step four: complete another book start to finish:) Wish me luck.

  9. My personal goal for the year 2012 is to be kinder to myself.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed for an Italian edition. Looking forward to your posts this year.

  10. My personal goal is to be more efficient and organized. This includes reading, blogging, and writing. Hopefully, I’ll be able to stick to it. The dog might have a different goal for me. And most likely, in the end, she’ll win.

    Happy New Year!

  11. Hmm personal goals… Read more, cause I defitninly slacked off last year on that and it makes me a little sad thinking about it. Take a bigger chunk out of my debt oh and move out of the house. Yup, that sounds about right. If I could do those things life will be good.

@Katie Good luck with the bar.

  12. Really no edit!! Ugh, if you happen to pick me you can definitely yell at me for not checking my spelling :-/

(only if you pick me though, if not… ;-)

  13. Not entering this contest because I’m international but I just wanted to wish you a happy new year, Brenna. Um, also, whenever I click over to your blog my computer freezes for a few seconds. Every single time. I wonder if it’s just me or does this happen to anyone else?

  14. I would really like to start writing again this year. I’ve been working on my world for eleven years but there have been no new stories in at least four years. I want to fix that.

  15. My personal goal for 2012 is a little hard to explane. My friends play this game, but it’s less a game than just something to do. We call it Truth, and it involves asking questions. But they aren’t Truth or Dare questions. We aren’t trying to win. We just ask about things we want to know. Examples: If you were a tree, what kind do you think you’d be, and why? What is your favorite color of carpet? Do you talk to god in your head?
So, earlier this year a friend asked me “What’s your deepest fear?” and I laughed and said clowns, and she looked at me with a lot of censure and said “If you don’t know what you’re afraid of, you’re not going to face it.” And it was one of those moments that’s like being hit with a two by four, because I have no idea what scares me. I don’t look at my fears, because that way they might disappear. So my goal for this year is to pay attention to what scares me, and come to an understanding of it. It just seems like a big part of knowing yourself, like the way you should recognize your own faults, and I hate the idea that I don’t know myself. And hey, maybe I’m scared of fear its self, which would mean I’d be facing it, right?

    Happy New Year, Brenna.

  16. My goal is to be more spontaneous. I hope to, at some point this year, get in my car and start driving, with no set destination in mind. It will be a great experience.

  17. My goal is to get in better shape. I’ve let myself go quite a bit since going to college, especially now that I’m in law school, and I’d like to at least get in better shape, even if I don’t drop the weight I’ve gained….

  18. My personal goal is the same as it’s been for the last two years: read 100 books or more. (Last year I made it to 94, the year before that about 100). For both those years it also ended ‘and write that damn novel’ but this last year I actually managed to accomplish that, so my goal is just to write in general. Write. Either prolifically or well, we’ll see.

(Also, with Christmas break, I finally got both a copy of The Space Between and the time–read it in one night a few days ago. The characterization, the world building, awesome. Loved it.)

  19. My personal goal for 2012 is to begin my 4-month study plan and take the GRE General Test and English Subject Test. Tests scare me, so that 4 month idea might end up being 6, either way, I will take those tests this year and live to tell about it.

  20. I have two goals in 2012. First, I want to add 15 lbs of muscle to my upper body and get into better shape for my wife. Secondly, I want to finish reading this pile of books near me and finish the list that, seemingly everyday, keeps growing longer (The Replacement and The Space Between are already checked off as “Read”).

  21. A personal goal for 2012 for myself? I’m always thinking of what I can do for everyone else, that I rarely indulge in making plans for myself. But if I had to make one, I think my goal is to take better care of myself. Mentally, physically, emotionally. I spend so much energy on those around me, that I often forget to take care of myself and often get run down! So this year, I’m going to be better about that, but still take care of my loved ones :)

  22. Hmmm..I have many goals for 2012. I always do when it comes to the New Year. Maybe it’s because I am a Librarian, but I really want to feel organized again. Not just making sure my purse is actually searchable (which it never is..no matter how much dedication I use in order to clean it) but to feel in the now (comfortable). I am definitely not one of those people that feels ok in chaos, and I feel that trying to improve myself from here on out is a good goal in itself. So this means giving more effort to not only eating right and exercising (which is already annoyingly be advertised everywhere), but to get my life in order for the better. =)

  23. My goals for 2012:
    1. Finish my next novel and get it off to a publisher by June.
    2. Get the license for my business squared away and get it moving forward.
    3. Get back in shape for a martial arts demonstration this October.

  24. Hm, my personal goals are all school-based. One is to get at least a mid-B in all of my classes this year. Another is to procrastinate less on my homework. My goals are rather straightforward this year. Thanks for this contest!

  25. My goal for 2012 is to finish my WIP novel. I just started a new school and I have been woefully neglecting it.

  27. Happy New Year to you and oooh, yay, a giveaway! I just made my list of goals today – and the first one is to put on my Big Brave Girl pants (they have less ruffles than my Big Girl Pants) and write at least 3 short stories – and post them on my blog – because sharing my stories publicly is one of my biggest fears, and I’m ready to step out of my comfort zone a little. :D

    Thanks for this!

  28. In 2012, I resolve to frequently do something new and fun. –Something new, because same drives me out of my mind and because the world is teeming with variety and, whether or not time is linear, 2012 certainly seems like a finite segment of it, so time’s a-wastin’! –Something fun, mainly because, come on, it’s fun! More specifically because fun increases my energy, openness, alertness and feelings of happiness.

If, by chance, you draw my name, a non-English edition would be new and fun.

I hope you’re prolific in the new year. Your stories and novels pull me into a different reality. I just love it. Thanks.

  29. My goal is to get back into the routine of writing daily, and start posting excerpts and short stories where I can get advice. I am too protective of my stories, I tend to treat them like my children. As a result i never seem to grow in my ability to express my thoughts.
    thanks

  30. My goal for the year is to actually finish one of my bazillion “in progress” novels. IT MUST BE DONE!!! And I Shall PREVAIL!

  31. ooh, Brenna books. Intriguing.

One of my personal goals this year is to get the novel I finished last year into submittable status. I am about 3/4 through the first read-through, and I’m happily surprised by how much I have improved since my very first novel-length work! I think that is a good start to the otherwise daunting revision process.

  32. My goal for 2012 is to work out more, stick to my diet, and reach my goal weight. Not for anyone else but for myself. This is actually my New Year’s resolution and one that I plan on actually keeping.

  33. My goal is to finish grad school or die trying! Happy New Year!

P.S. I speak French so if you have a copy dans ma langue préférée, I’d happily take it off your hands.

  34. I’ve got three primary goals for 2012. The first is to finish more knitting projects than I start this year. That one, surprisingly, will probably be the most difficult. The second, is to lead my roller derby teams’ practices effectively and efficiently in order to get them ready to have as good a second season as they had the first. The third is to become a better jammer (roller derby again) this season. That’s what I’ve got this month, anyway. I’m also trying to set monthly personal goals in order to better achieve my yearly goals.

  35. Kind of fell out of the habit of reading for fun for about a decade, until the end of 2011 when I rediscovered how much I love to read and how many great fantasy books were out there too read! New Year’s goal number one: try to read a book a week!

Hope one of those 52 books is a new one from you — Happy New Year!

  36. My goal for 2012 (and, really, every other year) is to not let anyone else’s (ie, my parents’) words define me, because I am sick of feeling guilty for living, and I want to be happy. Easier said than done, at any rate…

My email is amy408 (at) gmail (dot) com.

  37. My goal is to make more time for “me”. Being married, a new mommy and working full time takes away alot of my time. I’m not complaining or anything because I love my life. But I aim to at least give myself some alone time whether it be shopping or just quiet time to read. So far my husband has been great and helping me achieve that goal.

  38. What I’m hoping to be able to do this year is have a lot more patience. I have a four year old and he doesn’t stop talking for more than two seconds at a time, and it slowly wears down my patience! Other than hopefully I’ll be healthier in my food choices this year but I say that every year. lol

  39. My goal for 2012 is not allow minor incidents to work me up and stress me out. And to read 50 books by the end of December.

  40. Well, basically my goal is as simple as it can be…..be able to control things with my mind or mabye just to be able to make things burst into fire when i stare at it intently for a few, long pondering moments.

yeah…. thats not happening…. This was basically the same goal as last year but still no result, i am not sure what to blame so i will blame gravity because gravity has to do with everything .. *.*

so i guess start to try and learn french because the sickening truth is, that i don’t understand it and i am taking it in school.

  41. My goal for 2012 is to finish the book I’m writing. I also want to make some new art, get better at guitar, and possibly do something I’ve never done before. I don’t usually make goals for the year because I love the beauty of spontaneity and the carelessness of just wingin’ it. Who knows what could happen?
