No matter how many times I start to write this post, I keep wanting the basic thesis to be that Emily Hainsworth is delightful.
However, as with so many of my basic theses, that doesn’t actually tell you the part you need to know. I mean, you should know that she’s delightful, but more relevant-to-you-this-minute (until you meet her somewhere, in which case you will discover her delightfulness for yourself) is this other thing:
Her debut novel THROUGH TO YOU just came out last week, and I wanted to tell you about it, because it’s also delightful, but in less of a let’s-drink-coffee-and-talk-about-how-much-we-love-Christopher-Pike* way and more of an Ooh, an otherworldly phenomenon—now let’s look at all the dysfunction! kind of way.
I really, really love this book because it’s about difficult relationships and messy choices and romantic tension and bodily harm and all the pointy, confusing things that can come along with grief and loss and supernatural goings-on and having to live in the world. Which also happen to be all the things I love most, and I so want to share it!
So, for you guys! I have two prize packs, each consisting of a signed hardback, plus swag (plus anything else I might throw in on top if I put these prize packs in their mailers and then decide they don’t look prize-packish enough).
All you have to do to win is take a minute to leave a comment, which I will give you until Midnight Eastern on October 14th to do. Also … the comment should be of some substance somehow. So, how should we do this? I promised this was going to be easy, so I am determinedly NOT going to overcomplicate things.
Okay, the title of Emily’s book comes from a song, and I like that about it, so what I want is for you to tell me your favorite song lyric. (Also, it doesn’t matter if it’s only your favorite today and you like something different tomorrow. I am not the Favorite Things Police.)
Also, while I’m not doing dedicated international and US winners this time, you can enter from ANYWHERE.
Ready, set, go!
(Also, leave some form of identifying information so that if you win, I can let you know.) (Email, twitter handle, anything.) (I’m not picky.)
*Which I get to do sometimes, because she’s from Denver too, and I’d sort of casually (understatement) been keeping my eye on THROUGH TO YOU ever since I heard it existed, because it sounded exactly like my sort of book, and then I found out she lived near me and was diligent and stalked her on twitter until she agreed to hang out and let me read her book.
I have such a great feeling about this book. These days, I rarely get to read what I really want to read, mostly I read what I have to for my blog and have zero time for other stuff, but I’m SO determined to make room for Through to You, I just know I’ll love it. (Plus, a recommendation from you is all I really need.)
Thank you for the giveaway, Brenna!

And because I’m a bit lost, I forgot my favorite song lyrics! That would be Afraid by Sarah Fimm.
“I’d like to hold you close
Make you feel safe
Not so afraid of yourself
If we have to part so it shall be
I’d like to help you suffer less
Not be so locked up in your thoughts
Afraid of love and all under the sun.”
SO many lyrics to choose from! But such an awesome prize!
One line that constantly runs through my head, from Matchbox 20 is:
“I wish the real world, would just stop hassling me”
and another favorite is from Sarah McLachlan:
“Time here, all but means nothing just shadows that move across the wall
They keep me company, but they don’t ask of me
They don’t say nothing at all”
Both of which I suppose are very appropriate when it comes to my writing time. :)
Wish I could have come to see you at the Tattered Cover! So many things I miss not living in Colorado anymore. :(

My favorite song lyric has to be from Life Is Beautiful by Sixx AM: “There’s nothing like a funeral to make you feel alive.”
It’s sad but very true.

I LOVE your description of what THROUGH TO YOU is about! I’m not entering the giveaway, but I had to tell you that… I wish I could have stated it as beautifully in my review!
I also wanted to tshare my favorite song lyric of the moment, it’s from Mumford & Son’s Ghosts That We Knew:
“So give me hope in the darkness
that I will see the light
cause oh that gave me such a fright.
But I will hold as long as you like
Just promise me we’ll be alright.”
Here’s a video of the song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCv0bbhxGtQ&feature=related
It was great seeing you again, and I’m looking forward to Teen Week Oct 20th! :)
I love love love Mumford and Sons.
I love the line in “I Gave You All” that goes: “If only I had an enemy/ bigger than my apathy/ I could have won”.
This is a really cool, simple contest, thanks!
Also, my twitter handle is @actualteen, sorry!
I love Mumford and Sons! I Gave You All is such a great song because it has so much feeling in it. :)
I love your description of the book. My favorite song lyric is from Artificial Nocturne by Metric. I normally write to this song.
I can’t fake the daytime
Found an entrance to escape into the dark.
Got false lights for the sun
It’s an artificial nocturne
It’s am outsider’s escape for a broken heart.
Thanks for a great giveaway!
I forgot to give you twitter handle. Its @katherine0175.
Thanks again!
My favorite song lyric is easily, “Only the curious have something to find” from “This Side” by Nickel Creek. Although I also adore a line from “Are You Still in Love with the World?” by Raina Rose: “Faith is a mouse in the biggest of houses.” They are both ideas that are dear to me and if I were a tattoo sort of person their mark would no longer be invisible on me. My email is nameless.ship@gmail.com (after another Raina Rose song, coincidentally).

I like pointy, confusing things and otherworldly dysfunction and having to live in the world. I think I may have to read this book.
My favorite song lyrics, as of five minutes ago, are:
On the back of a motor bike
With your arms outstretched trying to take flight
Leaving everything behind
But even at our swiftest speed we couldn’t break from the concrete
In the city where we still reside.
Because they are sad and lovely and make my chest ache. Also, I am holed up in the corner of the living room writing about lost things and lovely things and things that believe so badly that they’re whole, and I think I might cry. I have great respect for any artist that can make me cry.

That’s one of my favorite parts from Picking Up Pieces by Blue October. It’s pretty much my theme song lol :D. I know that’s more than one lyric, but I couldn’t pick just one :D.

My favorite lyrics ever are from Bon Iver’s song called Skinny Love.
“and I told you to be patient
and I told you to be fine
and I told you to be balanced
and I told you to be kind”
I could never get tired of this song.

I love David Cook’s Fade Into You :
When I’m broken you’re the one thing I need
Like an ocean I feel you crash over me
We disappear into each other
Our colors appear and bleed into one.
Thanks for the giveaway!
Off the top of my head, my favorite lyric is from Drain You by Nirvana:
“One baby, to another, says I’m lucky to have met you.”

I like the song lyrics for Hazy by Rosi Golan (http://youtu.be/SNtt0hyDWFI?t=25s) right now:
What if I fall and hurt myself? Would you know how to fix me
What if I went and lost myself? Would you know where to find me
If I forgot who I am, would you please remind me oh?
Cause without you things go hazy

One of my favourite lyrics right now:

Hrmmm… I think, as if right now, my favourite lyrics are from Bones by Ms Mr
“Lost in the pages of self made cages
Life slips away and the ghosts come to play
These are hard times
these are hard times for dreamers
And love lost believers”

One of my favourites:
‘There’s a boy across the river with short black curly hair
He wants to be my lover and I want to be his peer

@salomt
A groan of tedium escapes me,
Startling the fearful.
Is this a test? It has to be,
Otherwise I can’t go on.
Draining patience, drain vitality.
This paranoid, paralyzed vampire act’s a little old.
But I’m still right here
Giving blood, keeping faith
And I’m still right here.
Wait it out,
Gonna wait it out,
Be patient

It’s title is from a song lyric? That’s so awesome! I would say All American Nightmare was my favorite, (terrific beat, amazing scratchy man voice) but it’s not exactly appropriate for mixed company. So, the song I find myself singing the most often is…also not appropriate.
Next runner up…
We’ve all seen the man at the liquor store beggin’ for your change
The hair on his face is dirty, dreadlocked and full of mange
He ask the man for what he could spare with shame in his eyes
Get a job you f**kin’ slob’s all he replied
God forbid you ever had to walk a mile in his shoes
‘Cause then you really might know what it’s like to sing the blues
Then you really might know what it’s like
Mary got pregnant from a kid named Tom who said he was in love
He said don’t worry about a thing baby doll I’m the man you’ve been dreamin’ of
But three months later he said he won’t date her or return her call
And she sweared god da*n if I find that man I’m cuttin’ off his balls
And then she heads for the clinic and she gets some static walkin’ through the doors
They call her a killer, and they call her a sinner, and they call her a whore
God forbid you ever had to walk a mile in her shoes
‘Cause then you really might know what it’s like to have to choose
Then you really might know what it’s like
I’ve seen a rich man beg
I’ve seen a good man sin
I’ve seen a tough man cry
I’ve seen a loser win
And a sad man grin
I heard an honest man lie
I’ve seen the good side of bad
And the down side of up
And everything between
I licked the silver spoon
Drank from the golden cup
Smoked the finest green
I stroked the fattest dimes at least a couple of times
Before I broke their heart
You know where it ends
Yo, it usually depends on where you start
I knew this kid named Max
He used to get fat stacks out on the corner with drugs
He liked to hang out late at night
Liked to get shit faced
And keep pace with thugs
Until late one night there was a big gun fight
Max lost his head
He pulled out his chrome .45
Talked some s**t
And wound up dead
Now his wife and his kids are caught in the midst of all of his pain
You know it crumbles that way
At least that’s what they say when you play the game
God forbid you ever had to wake up to hear the news
‘Cause then you really might know what it’s like to have to lose
Then you really might know what it’s like
To have to lose…
Probably still not the best song for mixed company, but it sure is good. :)

No light, no light
In your bright blue eyes
I never knew daylight could be so violent
A revelation in the light of day
You can’t choose what stays and what fades away
And I’d do anything to make you stay
No light, no light
Tell me what you want me to say
Would you leave me
If I told you what I’d done?
And would you leave me
If I told you what I’d become?
‘Cause it’s so easy
To say it to a crowd
But it’s so hard, my love
To say it to you out loud

@Katharynv
This is one of the best songs ever! It will be stuck in my head all day now, no doubt. :) The whole Florence + The Machine album is incredible. I also really love the song Bedroom Hymns.
‘Drops of Jupiter’ by Train. It’s been one of my favorite songs since it came out how ever many years ago.
“Now that she’s back in the atmosphere
With drops of Jupiter in her hair, hey, hey
She acts like summer and walks like rain
Reminds me that there’s time a to change, hey, hey
Since the return from her stay on the moon
She listens like spring and she talks like June, hey, hey”

I can’t pick just one VNV Nation song as my favorite lyrics. Best lyrics of anybody working in Industrial/EBM today, hands down.
“Standing”
And fighting time, so much I ask
I will this moment last forever
Though seasons change and things come to pass
Remain inside of me
And fighting time so hard I pray
That this moment lasts forever
And will the world stay standing still, at least for me
“Gratitude”
Sometimes I wish, that you could see me now.
In the rightful place, where I knew that I belonged.
Sometimes I wish, that you might someday understand.
to close the chapter, and lay to rest the past.
But nothing would change, we make the best of what we have.
for we are measured by the actions of our lives.
we bide our time, let the future unfold.
Like immortals, in great legends to be told.
My god, look at what we are now –
without regret for all the things that we have done.

Well, my favorite lyrics and son this years has been Turn Loose The Mermaids“ by Nightwish. It is such a beautiful song despite the fact that it is about losing someone. How curious that death can also arise such beautiful feelings. I really like it because is a different and positive perspective of death, mourning and farewell. :) I hope you like it ^_^
Here it goes ~
A kite above a graveyard grey
At the end of the line far far away
A child holding on to the magic of birth and awe
Oh, how beautiful it used to be
Just you and me far beyond the sea
The waters, scarce in motion
Quivering still
At the end of the river the sundown beams
All the relics of a life long lived
Here, weary traveller rest your wand
Sleep the journey from your eyes
Good journey, love, time to go
I checked your teeth and warmed your toes
In the horizon I see them coming for you
The mermaid grace, the forever call
Beauty in spyglass on an old man`s porch
The mermaids you turned loose brought back your tears

I love this giveaway and I’ve wanted to read this book since I saw it displayed at chapters a week ago!
Right now I keep replying the scientist by Coldplay sad song I know but I always found that the saddest songs hold the most truth , the most emotion too. My favourite part of the song is : nobody said it was easy , it’s such a shame for us too part, nobody said it was easy, no one ever said it would be so hard , oh take me back to the start.
From what I’ve read in the synopsis it seems that this song is what Camden must feel towards viv
There are some bands listed above I am not familiar with. I will definitely be heading to iTunes to check these songs out!
My favorite lyrics comes from the song Closer by Kings of Leon . . .
Stranded in this spooky town
Stoplights are swaying and the phone lines are down
This floor is crackling cold, she took my heart, I think she took my soul
With the moon I run far from the carnage of the fiery sun
(Sorry, I could not just pick the one line in the song! I guess if I had to break it down I would pick. . . She took my heart, I think she took my soul.)

I’ve been looking forward to reading this book for a while!
My favorite song lyrics at the moment are Forever Young, especially the first verse:
May the good lord be with you
Down every road you roam
And may sunshine and happiness
Surround you when you’re far from home
And may you grow to be proud
Dignified and true
And do unto others
As you’d have done to you
Be courageous and be brave
And in my heart you’ll always stay
Forever young
I just love it!

The book looks really interesting! One of my favorite song lyrics is:
“…out on the boulevard, the sound of an old guitar is saving you from sinking.” (Belle of the Boulevard by Dashboard Confessional) Because sometimes all it takes is a song to remind me of a good day, or just make me happy.

This one always reminds me of my sister, who passed away when we were kids:
When I was a child I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye
I turned to look but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown
The dream is gone
-Pink Floyd “Comfortably Numb”
Because I am somewhat concerned that I did the Wrong Thing (because I am the only one who replied on Goodreads), I thought I would re-post my entry here:
Favorite lyric right now:
“I want a breeze and an open mind,
I wanna swim in the ocean wanna take my time, for me. All me.”

“In the end the whole world comes down to just a few people, but, for you it comes down to one.
But nobody ever asked me if I thought I could be everything to someone.
And you’ve decided to love me for eternity, but, i’m still deciding who I wanna be today.”
LOVE that song!!

Ah, I love so many songs that I have no idea which one I should pick! x) Well, this time I’m going to pick a song from Jamie Scott and the Town. :)
“When will I see your face again
When will you touch my life again
When will I breathe you in again (I think I love you)
Will I see your face again”
I don’t know why, but I think it sounds very suitable for Through to You! The longing that the main character feels for the dead girlfriend. Or maybe it’s me over thinking hehe!
Thank you for the awesome giveaway, Brenna! You rock! ♥ :)
